The school opened it's doors on Dec 1 and offers classes to children ages 3 and up focusing on food safety, meal prep, etiquette and food education. The home located off Northeast 78th Street in Vancouver is two levels and showcases kitchen areas and dining rooms perfect for entertaining small guests.
The kids put on their aprons and start to bake, cook and learn with information as detailed as red food color #4 and it's effects on children their age. The kids also practice napkin folding, table setting as well as meal preparation and hands on cooking styles.
O'Connor instructs the children on how to read recipes, simple techniques for all types of recipes and kitchen tool identification. The kids have voiced how much they love it and parents at home seem to be getting a taste of the successes at the school as well! It's highly interactive which is really the only way to learn basic cooking skills and techniques. Not only is it a way for children to learn to cook but cooking requires math and reading skills as well. This is also a great way for kids to learn where their food actually comes from; not just from a box from the grocery store.
There are different varieties of cooking classes in the Vancouver area. Feel free to email O'Conner or visit the website at http://www.thekidscookingcorner.com or call 503-381-0933.
