November 21, 2010 - How to Prepare Your Garden for Winter
The Northwest presents a quandary when deciding when to put your garden to bed. With roses and dahlias still hanging on the thought to retire the beds can be put on hold until the first frost. But then again you don't want to ruin anything for next year. But tender items such as fuchsias and geraniums will die if frost hits them so it maybe time to dig them up. Pots and planters that will not withstand freezing temps can be brought into a basement or kept for indoor use. Trying to keep the plants in a state of dormancy can help strengthen roots for next year. If you are protecting plants over winter outside keep them covered with mulch or straw. Burlap is also a good material to use to cover and will tend to keep pesky weeds just a little at bay over the course of winter. Learn more about wintering over your Clark County home and landscaping here.

The apple pressing is one of several seasonal weekend entertainment options in Clark County and Portland. Others include a Halloween-inspired concert, a spooky theatrical spoof and a visit from the headless horseman. There’s more to the latest train trip from the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad than a scenic ride through north Clark County. Along the way, the train will be chased by a headless horseman.
